📢 Attention Cowessess First Nation Residents, Don’t Forget to Replace Your Furnace Filter!
As cooler weather settles in, your furnace is working harder to keep your home warm and comfortable. One of the easiest, and most important, things you can do to help it run efficiently is regularly replacing your furnace filter. The Housing Department will not be providing furnace filters, as it is the responsibility of the Tenant to obtain and change the furnace filter as per the Housing policy.
The filters previously provided by the Housing Department were provided to remind and show the tenants how to change the furnace filter. Also to make sure there is a filter installed, as some units did not have a filter, which damages the furnace. This means housing will not be changing or providing filters going forward. And any damage to the furnace due to the lack of filter, or negligence on changing the filter, will be the responsibility of the tenant.
Here’s why it matters:
✅ Cleaner Air
Your furnace filter traps dust, pet hair, and other airborne particles. No filter or a dirty filter can’t do its
job, which means those particles circulate through your home. Replacing your filter helps improve air
quality — especially important if you have allergies or pets.
✅ Lower Energy Bills
A clean filter allows air to flow easily through the system. A clogged filter forces the furnace to work
harder, which uses more energy and increases your heating bill. Changing the filter regularly keeps
your system efficient and your costs lower.
✅ Avoid Costly Repairs
When your furnace struggles to push air through a clogged filter, it increases wear and tear on the
system. When a Furnace doesn’t have a filter installed, it clogs the blower fan and the heat exchange.
As well as coating the wiring and vents in dust and other particles. This can lead to breakdowns,
shortening of the life of the unit or breaking the unit, or possible fire and/or air quality issues.
Replacing the filter helps prevent unnecessary damage.
How Often Should You Replace Your Filter?
– Every 1–3 months is recommended.
– Change more often if you have:
o Pets
o Allergies
o Daily furnace use during cold weather
How to Replace Your Furnace Filter:
1. Turn off the furnace. (usually a labeled switch near the furnace unit)
2. Locate the filter compartment (usually near the blower or return vent)
3. Check the size of the filter (printed on the old one)
4. Remove the old filter and dispose of it. Make sure to have a new filter on hand.
5. Insert the new filter with arrows pointing in the direction of airflow
6. Turn the furnace back on
