Update on the 1907 Land Claim

Tanisi and Anin, Cowessess First Nation Citizens,
Chief and Council would like to share another update on the 1907 Land Claim and the important work that continues while we await the next steps in the federal process.
As shared in our last update, negotiations for the 1907 Land Claim are complete, and we are satisfied with the settlement amount. Our focus now is ensuring Cowessess is at the front of the line when the federal government includes specific claims in their upcoming budget. We remain in regular contact with federal officials and are doing everything we can to keep our file moving forward. Preparing for the Settlement Payout
While we wait, Chief and Council are actively working to prepare for what comes next. The 1907 Land Claim will be a historic settlement with an opportunity to build lasting prosperity for Cowessess. We recognize that this claim holds deep emotional and cultural importance to our members, and we are committed to ensuring that it benefits both individuals and the Nation today and for generations to come.
We are conducting a careful review of our current trust and exploring ways it could be strengthened to better protect and grow the Nation’s wealth. We want to ensure that it can handle rising costs, support land purchases, generate wealth, support economic development, and provide long-term benefits for all Cowessess citizens.
Protecting What’s Ours
A modern trust will help ensure that Cowessess only pays what is fair and necessary, while avoiding excessive fees or outside payments that do not benefit our people. Every dollar that we protect is a dollar that can support homes, programs, and long-term security for our Nation. A modern trust will grow our wealth in diverse and responsible ways, while ensuring that the trust generates wealth, rather than only maintaining its value with no options to generate wealth for our people – now and for future generations.
Looking Ahead
As we move forward, we will continue to share updates and keep you informed every step of the way. When a formal settlement offer is received, it will be up to the membership to decide whether to accept it.
The 1907 Land Claim represents more than a settlement—it is a chance to build something lasting for our families, our community, and the generations to come. Together, we are laying the foundation for a future rooted in strength, unity, and shared prosperity.
